Starting a business in Finland: Business ID, bank account and accounting

Starting a company is exciting, but it also involves practical matters that must be handled carefully. A Finnish Business ID, a bank account and properly arranged accounting provide a stable foundation for growth.

Put the essentials in place from the beginning

Starting a company is exciting, but it also involves practical matters that must be handled carefully. At the beginning, make sure the essentials—a Finnish Business ID, a bank account and accounting—are properly arranged. This allows you to focus on the business and build a stable foundation for future growth.

1. Finnish Business ID—the company’s official identifier

A Finnish Business ID, or Y-tunnus, identifies a business. It is used on invoices, in agreements and when dealing with the tax authorities. A sole trader can start the business in MyTax and receive a Business ID immediately. Trade Register registration, when required or desired, is handled separately through the YTJ service. The formation process differs for other company forms.

2. Business bank account—keeping finances under control

Open a separate bank account for business transactions from the beginning. A separate account makes accounting, financial monitoring and taxation considerably easier, even though it is not expressly required by law for every company form. The bank will normally request information about the business and its responsible persons and may also ask for a business plan.

3. Accounting—the foundation of company finances

Businesses have a statutory accounting obligation. The entrepreneur must ensure that transactions are recorded appropriately and supporting documents are retained. You can handle accounting yourself or use digital software, but outsourcing it to an accounting firm is practical for many entrepreneurs. Responsibility for meeting the obligations nevertheless remains with the entrepreneur or company management. Agree early on who will handle the accounting and how documents will be delivered.

4. Other practical matters

Also consider insurance, including YEL pension insurance, and any permits or authority notifications required for your industry. A business plan and financial forecast are worth preparing because they clarify the direction and goals of the business.
